I just don't see how a vehicle can pull itself around with the transmission fluid being 3-6 quarts low. And no apparent leaks.

I'm not trying to cast doubt on your under-the-hood knowledge. Stranger things have happened.

Incidentally, a transmission doesn't reach full operating temperature until about 30 minutes or so of high-speed driving. It's still cold at 10 minutes.
No disrespect, but you answer is complete and udder insanity! I am a 34yr old man who has rebuilt several engines and have done my own repairs for as long as i can remember. So ya i know which dipstick to check , and like i said earlier i drove for around an hour in Florida where its 80 outside before checking it lol, and i checked in neutral and in gear just to see if there was a change(which there was not). And the Jeep runs completely fine even 3 qts low on fluid. Almost every comment here has been someone echoing the last guys jab about a dipstick or how i checked levels but hardly any mention of where my trans fluid is going. If it was normal i wouldn't be here asking for help lol. But as a previous poster stated, i should post this in the Cherokee forum which i thought i did, but i will move there now for help. thank you for anyone who answered trying to help.

You did!

You need to post it in the Grand Cherokee forum.

On the subject of where it's going, I think you can safely ignore the "axle seals" suggestion.

One more thing to try: Put cardboard or newspaper under the beast, all over anywhere that there might even remotely be a place where it could leak, and let it idle for.... long time. Hours, if needed. See where it drips. I know you did the GoPro thing (great idea!), but it might not have been pointed where the leak is hiding.

I figured you would react to my post that way. That's why I qualified my answer in advance. Post #26 mentioned the 10 minutes--I was basically refuting that in my post.

We're trying to help you out the best we can over the internet. It's too bad that you ask for help, then get defensive over our posts and act like we are personally attacking you. We have no idea of your mechanical experience--or lack thereof.

I personally have had vehicles that got a quart and a half low on fluid and wouldn't move. Good for you that yours will.

My earlier answer was reasonable under the circumstances.

Maybe the folks over on the Grand Cherokee side will be more to your liking. Good luck solving your problem.

Yes this is the XJ section, ZJs are Grand Cherokees and use different driveline components.

Disappearing ATF with no obvious leak eh? Is your coolant still green and clear?

Almost all auto transmissions are checked in park or neutral. From an operational standpoint, the only difference is whether the parking tab is engaged or not. Won't make a difference in checking the level.

If there's no difference between checking in neutral/park and checking in gear, something is way off.
The "almost" being certain Chrysler transmissions, like the ZJ and a few XJs have, which indeed do pump fluid in Neutral but NOT in Park.
