Default Lighter

Afternoon all:

I have acquired a 94 GC, I6, 4wd. Previously had an 87 wagoneer limited, so I'm learning about GCs as I go.

The lighter socket will not charge the cell phone adapter. The puzzling part is that the lighter works very well.

The adapter works in other cars, so I'm guessing it is something to do with the wiring in the GC.

Is this a common problem? Any suggestions of where to start?

Thanks in advance!

Maybe the contacts on the adapter are not touching the metal points in the socket?

XX2 what he said about the contacts not touching.. I have to insert mine in a certain position. Just look closer at it.

Also, you might have an aux socket there for chargin' stuff. My '93 has one.. I had this thing for 4+ years, and just noticed it had one last week. It's kinda below the ash tray, and towards the pass side.

Just an FYI if your charging plug in is like mine genetic from say Amazon Vs. Apple, ATT Phone stores etc.. It may not operate as efficiently out of some of the car lighter sockets as say OEM plug in chargers from your phone manufacturer.

Mine actually reads out this receptacle is not comparable with your vehicle? I have it down to replace mine too.
I still charges it but I have to jiggle it around and play with it. It also gets very hot. My 0.02.

Good luck and enjoy your evening.

Thanks for the responses!

I fiddled with it a bit this morning and it turns out that the adapter will work if it is in a particular spot. This leads me to think the socket connection needs to be cleaned and/or replaced.

The Haynes I have doesn't really show how to undo everything to get to the lighter socket. Searches are not providing that info either, or I'm not hitting the right links.

There are pretty clear steps for the XJ. but that's not helpful here.

Does anyone have a step by step breakdown of how to get to the lighter socket connection in a ZJ?

Thanks again!

My '97 ZJ had a power outlet socket behind a little door to the right of the ash tray. The internals of the lighter socket have clips to hold the lighter in until it gets hot. These interfere with charger power plugs.
