Lifting a grand cherokee
OK folks , I want to lift my grand cherokee to be able to run 31's. I think 33's may be to much for the vehicle, as I don't want to replace axles and gears. Also it is going to be somewhat of a daily driver. I can't afford it for a toy. I see some kits that swap front springs to the rear and replaces front springs for a 3" lift. How high can I go without needing longer arms and a whole lot of expensive parts? Is there a junkyard swap? I have seen cheeper kits on ebay , but I refuse to buy chinese stuff.
I don't like blocks so much either but I guess I would take it into consideration if a reliable source said it would be ok. I would also like to have gas shocks. If I just got blocks could I get longer shocks to match? What is the best budget way to go? Also I am thinking about replacing the exhaust and using headers. Also on a budget. I'm not racing but I do like saving gas and getting better power. Advertisements all talk a big game so I can't believe any of them. Thats why I am asking here , for experienced jeep opinions and facts from real people that know. BTW I found a set of 17" wheels with good tires for a bargain. They are about the same as 31's. 31's now will rub and limit my steering and probably travel.

A home made cold air intake would be cool also. I would go as far as replacing the rocker arm ratio or intake if it were feasable also. Remember budget. Like I said I'm not racing just tryin to do a little better.

I wanted to add that my jeep is 97 Laredo, 4.0 , with straight front axle. I forget the name of the transfer right now , but I have 2 wheel , 4 wheel part time(which is opposite what I thought before learning on this forum), 4 wheel full time and 4 wheel low.

"5.0 injectors rock. Runs 100x better. 99 intake mani and long throw headers"
Hey thanks but can you elaborate? What are 5.0 injectors? Which brand of header are them? I have seen headers for as little as 150 and up to 600.
One poster suggested I focus on making it breath better. I'm not being mean but that is exactly what my question was about to begin with.
I want one of the cheaper brands , I will not spend that much on names.
Thanks again for the info. So I can go junkyard shopping and grab an intake from a 99 with a 4.0 and that is what you mean ?
As far as the lift goes I guess a few blocks may work , but what about shocks? Wouldn't I need a longer shock? I know I could search forums , but going through thousands of posts is mind boggling. Can't one of you experienced folks just reshare your knowledge?

Mine sucked with the lift and tires. Gears helped. . I did a new air box. Kind jy made. Works fine. Gonna get a snorkal though. Removed the front dam piece behind the grill. You need to do something with power. I used the 5.0 injectors older ones. Off a explorer mtneer or even 94 f150s. Just look at the plug. Even some new 4.6 l use them.. Helps atomize the fuel. Grab a 99-04 mani fold off a WJ jys pick and pulls. Paid 30$ for mine. I had custom header made. Stainless steel. NJ puts too much salt down now. I hate rust.

Thanks. I checked it out. nice work. I don't want to go so extreme though. What is max lift without going crazy on control arms and other expensive stuff? And I wanted springs but will spacers do ok , and then do i need longer shocks? Rough country has a reasonable kit re-using front coils to the rear and new front coils. But the shocks are hydros i think. i would want a gas shock , because i will be on the pavement a lot. I just want a decent looking daily driver that has better clearance for when I do go offroad. But I dont want the suspension to lose travel , i guess I would need some longer sway bar links. Jeeps are great offroad right out of the box, I'm not going rockcrawling but will have to get over the occasional log or pointy hilltop , or deep mud.

I have coil spacers on my 94 Grand Cherokee and they work great. It was a lot cheaper than buying a set of lift springs and for me made sense at the time.

I have coil spacers on my 94 Grand Cherokee. I have not had any problems with them. Just not as high as I want it. I want to put 35's under it.

Just remember guys, The bigger the tires, the more strain on the diffs!

BTW, your t-case is a 242 Selectrac. IMO, the most hardy one out there for the 4.0
