Just did a 249 to 242 swap and have no speedo/odo
I just finished putting a 242 transfer case into my 97 ZJ 5.2L I used the speedo gear from my 249 and it's definitely hooked up. I didn't however hook up the 4 wire connector because the 242 I got uses a 2 wire set up. Could it be that the gear in the 242 is not as wide so the teeth on my 249 speedo gear don't reach it and thus aren't being turned? I searched and couldn't find someone who ran into the same problem?

It ended up being that the speedometer gear was a quarter turn off. I just loosened the bolt and turned it to the very next notch and it was good as new. Now I can turn in this thing without it almost coming to a stop. The gas mileage doesn't seem to have improved that much. I didn't really expect it to but some people who've done the switch claim a big improvement. I think I'll probably get a better mpg improvement from a cold air intake since the stock system seems really restrictive. Now I need to throw some better speakers in this thing and it'll be a pretty good rig.
