I see this to bypass the NSS.

which is a different connector altogether. Stupid thing is, I have this connector as well. wtf?? Just nothing was connected to it.

Yes, it looks similar to a coolant temp sensor except I think it has straight threads and screws in until it stops. The end plunger rides on the shift cam inside the case. I think it costs about $25.

Where is the NSS on 1997 grand cherokee
I've got a '97 Grand Cherokee v6. First time working on it...
Wouldn't start..thought it was battery, replaced and still nothing.
Had problem with reverse lights, so, after reading and watching youtube videos, found its the NSS (Neutral Safety Switch).
After watching videos and looking at part, (I was looking for a 'triangle' looking piece, with a gear nut, 12mm nut and cable harness). Well, after looking all day, even opening center counsel
to see top of trans, no part, that looks like, everyone's pictures.
So apparently 1997 is totally different for other diagrams. Cannot find part, only found three cables going to different parts of the tranny..What am looking for to repair or replace?
Appreciate your help!

In your first photo, the one with the shift cable and spring, that black out-of-focus blob at the lower right is the NSS. The second pic shows the transfer case 4wd sensor and the vehicle speed sensor.
The last pic shows the CPS connector and the cam sensor connector. I think the oil pressure sensor is behind the cam sensor connector.
pic number 3 is irrelevant. Nice pics though. The NSS looks like it's leaking fluid. Maybe.

The XJ uses the AW4 transmission, the ZJ uses the 42re. Therein lies the difference.

uhh.. new nss didn't work...
Uhhh...Houston, I think we got a problem...
I bought a new NSS switch, installed it, double checked connections...re-assembled
shifter and console, shifter handle spring had goop inside it...finally got insert in correctly...
Hooked up battery, turned key and...nothing. Same reaction as before I was changed nss switch, turn key, hear one click and all idiot lights come on, but nothing turns over...Wtf.
I turn key to accelerate, was able to shift to drive/neutral (it was hard to do), just to test shifter. Now, I can't put it in park. Only R/N/D/2... Can't figure both problems out... I'm going to have to check starter now.
Anybody, ever have these issues?
Thanks in advance...

There is a shift interlock cable that runs from the key to the trans shifter that won't allow the key to be removed until it's in park, or it to be shifted OUT of park until the key is turned on. You also have to press on the brake pedal to get it out of park. I'm almost positive it's not assembled properly.
