Hello,
I'm having an issue with starting. Battery is good but nothing when turning the key. I'll run the shifter back and forth a bunch of times and it usually starts. I suspect the nss because the reverse light usually don't work unless I work the shifter a few times. This jeep has an internal nss...no way to clean or adjust it. Does anyone have experience with this issue or the best way to fix it?
Internal ? On a cherokee you just unplug and unbolt from side bottom of tranny. Open it up. Lightly sand the corrosion from all the copper contacts. Clean. Smooge dielectric grease throughout. Reassemble and install. Problem gone.
This is probably a GRAND Cherokee. It's a screwed in plug switch on the side of the transmission near where the shift cable enters. It's got a ball end that rides on the internal shift quadrant and it either works or it doesn't. You can try pressing the shifter HARD forward when it's in park and it MAY work every time. Before you condemn the switch, check the plug for corrosion or frayed wires.
i know after i bought mine, when i pulled the trans out i noticed all three wires going to the connector were exposed at the connector and looked like the sheathing had just worn off. caught it before it was giving me problems and replaced the connector.

did you splice in a new connector and if so where did you buy it?
where is the location of this NSS. I have a 2001 Grand Cherokee with a 4.0 which I think is a 42RE transmission. Is it on top of tranny or located in lower accessible spot?
As stated previously, reverse light flicker mostly on while IN DRIVE. If reverse lights are run thru neutral safety switch and this is where problem is, wouldn't I be noticing problem also with trying to start vehicle in park/neutral at same time. Are there two mechanisms that control this reaction, where neutral safety switch is working properly but some other switch related to shifter is weak causing reverse lights to come on at night while in drive. If I put it in neutral the reverse lights turn off, but immediately back on when put in drive???
I think I am good now, a mechanic I talked whom I think did not know his job well enough told me that it was on top of the tranny but I think he was referring to the 4.7 engine that has a different transmission. Your wiring description explained why it is the NSS and makes sense. THANKS, picked up one today and will
Install.
Hello y'all, my jeep isn't starting at all and I'm sure it's the NSS, but I'm not sure exactly where it is, every post I've looked is just the XJ and not the ZJ, it's honestly irritating haha, but I found this forum and i figured yall could help me out.
