Neutral Safety Switch in the transmission. 3 wire plug, one wire for power, one for starter, one for reverse lights.

 

 

My instrument cluster lights are supposed to be here on Thursday. My shifter lights were coming and going so I mounted two led light strips on top of the luminescent piece and wired them in. Wow! They are bright. They dim with the dimmer switch but not much. I'm going to pull the console again and use a white paint pen to cover each led so it's diffused a little.

 

If you're really cool, you can add a resistor to the power supply instead of painting them.

You'll have to do the math, but if you solder a resistor into the 12v supply wire to reduce it to 10v, it should dim the LEDs quite a bit. You'll have to know the current flow thru the LEDs to figure it out. Mounted LEDs have a current limiting resistor built into them. Measure the voltage going to ground after the pair of LEDs and you can figure the current.

 

I received the mini led's today. Replaced the 5 background bulbs per Dave. I got 2 of them backwards but no biggy. Once I got them all right I turned the lights on and I could see them even in the daylight. Couldn't do that before. They dim real good too. Can't wait to see them once it get dark. Here's the old and the new.

 

The first picture is taken during daylight, the second at dusk. when I dimmed it all the way it looked exactly the same as the old bulbs on full brightness. Very happy.

 

For the shifter LEDs, you can wire in an old radio volume control into the supply wires and adjust the brightness, then just leave it there, under the console. OR measure it's resistance at that point and substitute a resistor of that value instead.

 

The adjustable **** is not a bad idea. Now that I've installed the instrument panel led's I can dim the shifter light's lower than before. If anyone's reading this thread and considering an led strip in their shifter don't install two strips like I did. One is more than enough.
