Default info needed for newb

i'm looking at buying a 2000 grand cherokee. it's completely optioned out and in very straight, very rust free, very clean condition. it's a 4.0 4x4 and it has approx 140,000 miles. i am very new to these cars and i was looking for some info. should i let these miles scare me off of a 5 grand car even though the rest of it is near new looking? is there a usual lifespan to the chrysler transmission and diffs, if so, what should i expect? also, i found the selectrac 4 wheel drive lever to be very difficult to engage, is that normal? again, it's a very clean jeep, i'm just not familiar with their reliability and quirks, especially since i'm looking for a solid, reliable daily driver while i finish up my bmw project.

thanks,

ps i was not able to get any info on the car reguarding it's history since it was purchased at auction by a used car lot so i cannot exactly investigate its past maintainence. i do have a carfax being run tomorrow however.

Well, they are asking about $1100 below the KBB so it may be a good deal. I wouldnt worry about the 140000 either, that is a little mild.

For a truck from an auction, (according to the seller), with 140,000 miles of unknown history $5,000 is too high to me. 140,000 isn't a lot of miles for a 4.0L, but it is a lot of miles for $5,000. That's usually about the time things start going wrong. There are lots of nice 2000 or newer Jeeps available with less miles for that price or less. JMO but I'd pass on that one.

Oh, I thought you said quadra-drive for some reason... My selec-trac is a little stiff to move aswell. It may just be the way they are... Then again my dads Comanche is the same way along with my neighbors F-250. It may just require a lot of force to manually move components in the T- case.

the 4.0 is good for twice that/the case prob. sounds like unused shifter-use it if it get's stuck in a 4W select go to park lot drive 8's and back-up and slap transfer around till driveable again
