Ignition and ign. key sometimes doesn't work
Two or three times since I purchased the 95 ZJ, the ignition key would not turn to start the ZJ until after fumbling with it for a while, the key eventually turned to start the engine.
Today I shut off the ZJ, after a few mins I turned the ignition key ok but nothing happen, the starter would not engage. I must have tried a dozen times but nothing.
A person was going to pull me with his tractor and happen to try one more time turning the key all the way to the left for accessories and then to the right, the ignition worked and the engine started.
So I'm thinking the problem is with a worn ignition lock cylinder and/or the ignition switch?
Should I start out by replacing both the Ignition Lock cylinder and the starter switch?
Rockauto has WVE/AIRTEX/WELLS
Ignition Lock cylinder - 4H1094 $16.88 (with key)
Ignition starter switch - 1S6275 $14.95
With shipping the two items come to approx. $40.00 with shipping.
I'm not certain what a locksmith would charge to key the ign. lock cylinder to my existing key? A completely new key wouldn't fit the doors and glove compartment locks.
Though I doubt it's the problem as it has always worked is the ignition relay.
Are there other things to check out before replacing the ignition lock cylinder and switch? The 95 ZJ Limited does have some sort of security system that disables the ignition. (I did try turning the security on and off without any results)
Currently the ignition and key are working however I'm thinking the further worn either or both become the ignition will completely stop working and I would become stuck not being able to start the ZJ.
