Hi I have an 04 Cherokee with the Inline 6 and when im setting at idle while in drive my rpms surge a lot. Its not real noticeable on the gauge but I can really notice it physically and hear it.

Ive also have cleaned out the throttle and idle air valve with no luck. Kinda seems like a vacuum leak but cant pin that either. It only does it in drive and at a complete stop.

If its a 2004 its a Grand Cherokee. Moved to GC Tech....

When was the last tune up done?

Check TPS and IAC, clean the throttle body as well. Post back your results...

Sorry im brand new to the forum. I posted in my initial thread that I did clean the throttle and iac. I have also done a tune up just before winter. I will try the tps sensor though.

I would replace the iac solenoid
Pull the IAC off and with it plugged in have a person turn the switch on and see if it moves any if it don't move I would replace it.

Ok thanks I will do that. Autozone wants $68 for a iac but found out that rock auto has them for $36. So I will order one and when it gets here I will report if that helped.

Do you happen to have the A/C or defrost on when this is going on? If so, it's normal for the RPM to fluctuate when the A/C compressor kicks on, or when an electric cooling fan is switched on.

Okay I found my problem and I fix it. Changed out the idle air sensor the TPS sensor and the map sensor with no luck of fixing my problem. After changing those out 2 days later I got a check engine light. The trouble code said that it was a pressure control solenoid in the transmission. So I begin to investigate symptoms of that solenoid and it was exactly the same as what I was having issues with. So I went ahead and changed it and I found a kit from a website called cascade transmissions that had all the exact replacement parts. It came with the solenoid and 2 other sensors a 3-4 shift spring ( which mine was broken ) along with the kit to replace the transmission filter($150 vs $198 for just the solenoid from Jeep). After doing this all the problems I was having was gone I've been driving it for 2 weeks since I replace everything and have had no problems. My Jeep gets better gas mileage now and drives a lot smoother no idle issues whatsoever.

Also found out same symptoms I was having can be caused by a stretched shift linkage and low transmission fluid.
