Default How's the quadra-trac for off roading?

I'm new to the forum so if this is posted in the wrong place, by all means move it.

So I've been looking for a good jeep for a few weeks now. My budget isn't that high so I have to kind of sort out all the bad apples in my searches, but by luck I was able to find a nice looking 93 Grand Cherokee with the 5.2L V8 and 4x4 for a crazy low price. It has a quadra-trac in it though. I heard that the quadra-tracs wern't very good. How bad are they?

I plan to use it as my daily driver and go off roading with it once in a while. Would the quadra-trac be decent for off roading?

I have the Quadra-Trac in my XJ and it is my DD and I wheel it. It does great. You just cant use it on dry pavement. Other than that they are awesome.

Isn;t quadra trac the all time option with the np249? If so they are known for the viscous coupler going out. I've had a GC with a 249 and in my opinion I would not get one again. When the VC goes it locks you into 4wd and creates a series of problems that are expensive to fix.

Welcome to CF! I love my '97 Grand Cherokee (ZJ) Limited Orvis 5.2L as much as our '04(WJ) Grand w/the 4.7L. Pics are in my albums.
It's a great truck for towing my car/tow dolly, landscaping trailer, but it's only been off-road once since I had it and I was impressed. It was on the red-clay lake bed when they lowered the lake level.
If you decide to purchase it post some pics when you can.

I have a 94 Grand w/ the EXACT same setup. I don't use it for a lot of off-roading except when I go to the gun range or my cousins house. But, I can tell you that it can go up a 40 degree incline covered in several inches of snow. I don't do any off-road trails or crawling, but I can tell you that having all-time 4 wheel drive, with a powerful V-8, means the Jeep goes where you tell it to.

Don't forget, the Grand also has a lot of nice interior features the standard Cherokee and Wrangler don't have so if you're intending to use this primarily on the road, I'd get the Grand.

Maybe this clip will help make up your mind:

The Quadra-Trac does not have full time setting. Only part time high or low. Selec-Trac has the full time setting. Quadra-Trac has NP231 TC not 249.

Quadratrac(247/249, I can't keep them straight) is full time 4 wheel drive. It has 4 hi- n -4lo. Selectrac(242) has part time -full time-n- 4 lo. The 231 is called Commandtrac and has part time-n-4 lo. Quadratrac is fine for offroad, the main thing is the VC coupling going out. If it does go out it is not a problem to swap in a 242 or 231 if desired.

Quadra-trac I is full time 4 wheel drive, like Drakan said. If anyone wants to check out Jeep's website, it has a great reference for all of the available 4wd systems. Follow this link:
