I just swapped my NP249 to a NV242 transfer case. I need to know how much transmission fluid to put back in the case? I got the 242 from the salvage yard, and replaced all the seals and the tranny output seal as well.

Gonna give you all of them here, but you will need less than 2 quarts of ATF.

NP242 (selec-trac) 2.85pts or 1.425qts
NP249 (quadra-trac) 2.5pts or 1.25qts
NP231 (command-trac) 2.2pts or 1.1qts

 

I was told to fill to the bottom of the fill hole. Is this incorrect?

 

This is correct. Once you drain the fluid, screw the bottom drain plug back in. Then fill via the top plug until the fluid runs out.
