Sorry I've been off-line. If you've picked up this good luck. Maybe it will work with only you needing to switch sensors.
The '98 ZJ trans was a one year only deal according to a friend at the JY. Maybe it's only the sensors that are different, but the interchange says they won't work, even though they will bolt up. He's in business to make money, so I believe he'd sell it if it would work.
The following is from Wikipedia, (which isn't worth much)
ZJ Auto. Transmissions:
AW4-'93 4.0L
42RE-'94-'98 4.0L
46RH-'93-'95 5.2L
44RE-'96-98 5.2L
46RE-'98 5.9L

i havent gotten it yet. but its coming with a good motor and trans, 4in RE lift with polished alum rims and half treaded 32x1150s and im getting it for 350. so for the rims and tires and the lift its more then worth it. hell for the rims and tires alone its worth it. i have a week to pull off what i want, part out what i can. and i know a local yard will give me 300 cash for the body. (well they gave me 300 for my other zj with no motor trans or axles no interior, majority of the suspension so i figure with just the motor and trans rims and tires and some suspension i shouldnt have a problem getting my money back quick.
hopefully it does. before i pull mine ill look both them over real well and probably post pics and get a second opinion from everyone (mostly you)

You're right, you can't go wrong with that.
As far as the trans goes, I'm thinking it might be only the sensors that are different, but even those small things would stop the JY from selling it as a plug and play unit from what my friend says.
I'd install the sensors from your trans in the replacement trans before trying it out, to prevent the older sensors from possibly doing any damage to the '98 TCM.
I don't know much about transmissions, this is just my opinion on this. I do know the '98 ZJ TCM is different from earlier versions, and everything changed for '99 when the WJ came out. So '98 is a one year only TCM.
Hopefully others will chime in here with more advice.

Just a warning. Wiring and all electrics inside the trans are different. It's not gonna work.
My question is what's wrong with the one in the 98? Not shifting out of first?
