Hi, all!
I just picked up my 99 WJ from a mechanic, drove it two hours home with no problems. At home, I noticed the un-attached end of a hose dangling out the bottom of the engine compartment.
I traced the hose to the other end where it is attached, and I don't recognize the part or its function. Clearly it is non-vital, since I was able to drive the jeep over 100 miles with it detached!
I have attached a photo of the hose's location, and I was hoping someone would be able to help me identify this part, what it does, and where the other end of that dangling hose is supposed to be attached!

This is just below the brake fluid reservoir, for reference

that is just your front axle vent tube. it doesn't attach anywhere. i think it is just coincidence that you noticed it like that after you picked it up from the mechanic.
they likely just had to move it out of the way to get to something else.
don't worry about it, if you are worried, just zip tie it to something out of the way. but keep it up high.

Thanks for the reply!
Nice to know what the thing actually is. When i found it, the end of it was hanging down by the front differential -- way too low. The unattached end of it does kind of look like it was once attached to something though. Have a look below:

As you can see, there is an abrupt end to the grease covering the end of the hose, suggesting that this end was once plugged in to something.

It's possible it was in a clip or something. It's only there to vent the axle but not allow water to enter when you go "wading" in a stream or something. The next time I crawl under my WJ, I'll look to see where mine is, but not now.

Sorry about that, I should have been more descriptive. But thanks everyone for the responses and especially for the pic -- super helpful!
I'll be underneath the jeep changing its oil this evening, so I'll get that bad boy plugged right back in where it belongs.
Cherokee Forum is awesome!
