HELP PLEASE! 97 ZJ L6 to 01 WJ L6
So I have a 97 ZJ (grand cherokee laredo) with the straight six. Frames completely thrashed. Found an 01 Grand Cherokee Laredo with blown engine. I NEED to know if I can straight drop in this engine from ZJ to the 01. What will I have to change? Harness difference, any tips VERY APPRECIATED! Everything from ZJ in good condition so no problem swapping out CPU etc. Please let me know ASAP! Thank you so much, oh wise experts lol.

Hey Cameron, do check out my reply on your original post thread in the OEM section.
Basically, you will need to swap the 01 ignition onto your 97 block.
Your motor mount bolt holes may not be direct swap onto your 97 block.
But it can be done!

Old fart with a wrench
The motor mount bosses have been moved on the 99+ engine block, but they tell me you can mount adapter plates to them for the old engines. The only other problem I can see is the oil filter. It was moved on the newer blocks because it interfered with the mounts. If need be, you can add a remote filter kit. The digital cam sensor will mount in the distributor hole and you can add mounting brackets for the coil rail or use the 01 head. That's probably the best way to go because the 01 cast iron exhaust manifolds won't bolt up to the 97 head properly. You'll need the 01 intake manifold because it has mounting bosses on it for the power steering pump. If your 97 has a serpentine belt, you won't need the 01 water pump. You'll need to use all the other 01 accessories like the alternator and A/C compressor as well.
Be aware the 01 4.0 came with the 0331 head that tends to crack. There are 2 alternatives to this problem. One as an aftermarket head like the "Clearwater" head, or the factory replacement "TUPY" head. The TUPY head can be identified by this logo molded into the head directly under the oil filler cap hole; This head was standard for the 02-04 models.

XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.
2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.
XJ/ZJ blocks, and the 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1991 to 1995 YJ and 1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).
TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.
