Help Please
I posted the below quoted questions a few days ago, and haven't seen a reply so I'm reposting it to see if there is an answer to my problem. Thanks for any assistance provided.
Hi, I have a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with a 4.7 engine and actually have 2 questions.
1) The Cruise Control on light will turn on and stay on, however I can't set the cruise. I replaced the brake switch earlier this year due to a problem with the brake/tail lights (2nd question), and the Cruise Control was working at that time, it just stopped about a month ago. What else do I need to check? I've read on other sites to look at the vacuum hoses, but am unsure where to look for these.
2) The brake/tail lights stopped working, after researching and replacing fuses/brake switch and other low cost items I ended up replacing both brake/tail lights with a completely new package about 3 months ago. Now however, the driver side brake like is starting to short out again. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I live in a high humidity/dirt area (farms/gravel roads). Do I need to replace it again, and if so is there anything I can do to keep it from corroding/shorting out so soon again? (Personally I was thinking of wrapping the whole wire in electrical tape covered then by duct tape).
Thanks for any help provided.

Old fart with a wrench
The vacuum hose you need to check is the one going to the Actuator on the end of the cable that hooks to the throttle linkage. The system may be functioning electrically, but without a vacuum signal, it won't set.
On the tailights, try dielectric grease in the sockets and sealing o-rings and paint the outside with clear silicone. This will peel off to change a bulb.

I fixed my brake lights by doing this....
I took the assembly out when I got home and the single contact across from the two contacts on the brake socket was melted/ sunken into the plastic. I used a small screwdriver to carefully lift it up then I put some folded aluminum foil under it then re-installed the socket carefully. The first time I checked the brake lights I heard a small pop and nothing worked. I got under the drivers side floorboard and checked the fuse box there and I found the 20A fuse for the brake switch had popped. I replaced it with the spare that was on the fuse box cover and then checked them again and they worked with both the headlights on and off ! I drove around town and ran a few errands and at each stop I checked them and they worked. I'm so happy to have fixed it for basically free other than my time.
