Default Help IDing my Jeep and tranny issues

95 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo V8 4x4 automatic

Driving from Salt Lake to Phoenix, engine started reving at 3000 rpms and 60 mph...just a little, like it couldn't decide what gear to be in.

Stopped at a shop, guy said there was a leak in whatever hose goes from the coolant to the tranny (sorry, I'm totally ignorant about this stuff), said he fixed the leak, refilled tranny fluid, and it would get me to AZ.

It didn't. After 2-3 hours of driving, same issue returned. Kept driving, was in the middle of the desert, just trying to get home. Problem got worse, until when I stopped, jeep would not move.

Cranks up fine, but won't go, in either drive or 1st, or reverse, at all.

Questions:
1- is the tranny completely trash now?
2- if so, do I just buy a 46RH tranny and install it?

Again, I'm CLUELESS, so your patience and understanding is appreciated. Ask questions, I'll answer anything I'm able to or could find out.

Believe it's a 46RH.

More cost effective to replace with a reman transmission.

If it was leaking trans fluid like you say, and you kept driving it until it wouldn't pull any more, I'd say you fried it. JMO. I'd replace the trans instead of rebuilding it. Better warranty than a rebuild. I had a crate trans installed at the Jeep dealer in my ZJ and it came w/ a 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty for $2,400.
And Welcome to CF!

Ya, I'm thinking of just getting a used transmission with a warranty.

Evidently it didn't have overdrive. I bought it off a guy, but I'm not upset because I got it so cheap.

So once I get the tranny and have it installed, put tranny fluid in and a filter, is that it? I have some coworkers doing it for me, who are glad to do it, but should it be the end of the situation?

How much would be a fair amount to pay a guy who is doing a straight automatic transmission replacement. Said it'd just take 2-3 hours. He's looking forward to do it. I was thinking $2-300. Fair?

Thanks for the welcome and input.
