Hard start and chugging when driving

Engine: 4.0, new lifters valve job with new springs and exhaust valves, preload set with shims
Well its fixed. I went to pull the CPS and the old one wasn't even bolted in.

I am/might have a similar issue with my XJ. I took it into the shop because it was chugging badly, and would back fire when you would try to give it gas, it was undriveable.
Yesterday they replaced my CPS for me. I picked it up last night, and they said it still was running rough. I go after hours to check it out, and it now old chugs horribly during what feels like first gear, once I'm out, its fine.
Suggestions on what it could be? Could it be that I have some back fuel injectors?
