Gut the Air Box?
My 93 5.2lt gas mileage suuuucks. Best ever was 18 mpg. Normal is 16 mpg. I have not taken the air box out for a real good look see. Are there baffles in the thing that could be removed to help? As Im driving 40 miles 1 way everyday, Im not looking forward to gas bill.
Thanks

No baffles. You're getting the same mileage as me and I have the 4.0, and you drive the same amount as I do everyday. 80 bucks a week for gas is cheaper than a car payment.

No baffles, but that is about the stupidest setup I have seen for awhile! Broke one of the bolts off, the other 2 just spin. Once I finally got the box out, there is additional "air space" below the box that could be gotten too. So I cut a chunk out of the bottom of the box to allow more air and easier time to enter. Im thinking about removing the front of the snorkel that goes to the grill, why bother venting it up there, if your going to slap a lip on it to avoid ram air?
My other thought is:

Use something like this, but cut the steel under the airbox out so it fits down low. That should give it air as it flow from around the back side of the bumper. Dragging air from directly inside the engine compartment, is not my idea of a better way.

But sucking water into the engine will increase the compression ratio by leaps and bounds...for a short time...until the rods bend or the engine hydro locks.

The best way to up your gas mileage is to just be careful how you drive. No bolt on or accessory will give you more MPG than to drive really easy. keep it under 2kRPM.

If you want the best mileage then park the Jeep. It can't even compare to newer cars with their MPG's. I love the people that get on here that want their Jeeps to have respectable fuel mileage. Brand new, the sticker said my V8 got 18 mpg in the city...

Mine was like 12 and 16 new as far as mileage goes.
Before I go to fiddling anymore with the air filter, as I have already punched a hole in the bottom of the box. I did cover it with a fine mesh of aluminum screen (window screen)to block most of the crap out. Keep in mind this is in front of the Primary filter anyway. Not much is going to get by it. Im going to build a spacer for the top of the Tbody. The entrance there is not exactly smooth. Im thinking Ill start with just 1 inch and see if it hits anything.
I will say that the company Dodge Ram, with the small V8 routinely got 20mpg, and when running down hill from the Mountains to the Coast, on cruise it would get 22mpg!

One thing I did not mention.......
The closest this thing will get to off road is the Gravel Driveway in front of my house.
