Default Grand Cherokee HELP

Ok Jeep community I really need help, My daughter's 1996 Grand Cherokee with the 5.2L had a bad torque converter, I have gone through 3 different new ones that the local autozone has ordered and none of them fit. The neck size is the problem all the ones that they order with the gear on them have a neck size of 1.81 and the only one that I have been able to get inside the transmission has neck size of 1.54, but it had no gear on it. I believe the jeep is supposed to have the 42RE tranny in it but the only identifying marks I can find on it is on the bell housing and it has 230-2 stamped there. She just bought the cherokee last year so if there was a swap out of the tranny not sure what was put back in... She turned the old converter in for the core when the first one was ordered so we don't have the one that come off either... Any ideas???

Thanks
Bill

Welcome to CF!

Being a V8, it probably has a 46rh transmission in it. The 42re was used with the 4.0, of that I am sure.

OK through some more researching and measuring now I believe that it is a 46RE, but I still cannot find a torque converter with a pilot that will fit because it is definitely the small pilot.. Anyone know why this one would have the small pilot in it?

Thanks

OK have to correct something that I have been typing what I was calling the pilot is actually the HUB, so with that I think that I found the correct torque converter, so I'm off to the Autozone in the morning to get it ordered, looks like it the same as the one in the Dakota's and Durango's... Had to go to a Chrysler converter catalog to find it... Also looks like it is the 42re after all, will find out soon as the pump seal comes in, replacing it while I have the tranny out plus I marred it up a bit trying to get those other converters on the tranny...

OK Jeep folks,
Got a question for you, I finally got the torque converter straightened out, went ahead and changed the front oil seal for the pump before putting everything back together, got it all back together transmission shifts really nice, even the motor sounds better but now it's leaking really bad from the bell housing is there more than just the seal? Read on another forum that I should have changed O-Rings too??? Any ideas???

Thanks

The 1996 w/ 5.2 has the 44RE transmission, as-shown in this specification document.
