Default Good to do lifters?

Just wondering if i can replace the lifters in my 4.0L? it has 2 cylinders that tick pretty good when its cold, and they chatter a bit all the time. definitely top end. Someone told me i could only if the compression was tight... that true?

If you're going to do lifters, you might as well plan on a rebuild. You have to pull the cylinder head off to replace the lifters. The 4.0 I6 is a noisy engine, but it will last for hundreds of thousands of miles while making noise. Are you sure it's not an exhaust leak at the manifold?

My 4.0L has an exhaust header, and no leak. the top end makes noise. Try an engine flush?

You can still get leaks at where the manifold/header flange bolts to the head if the bolts are not torqued evenly or missing.

My 4.0 has 261,000 miles, is noisey, has cracked exhaust manifold, and various metaly banging dinging sounds when idling in gear. Just thought I would add that.

i put an engine flush in mine, because it was making the same noise.. and it made the engine sound worse

It also knocks really really loud for 2-3 minutes as it warms up in the morning. I didn't realize until i got out while i was warming it. These common for the bottom end to start knocking?
