Gearbox compatability 95 model and 2000?
Hello,
This is my first post here as I am new to Jeeps, so please excuse any technical naivety.
I just bought a 1995 4.0 six cylinder Grand Cherokee. A week later the gearbox gave up.
A local 4X4 garage fitted a used box from a 2000 model (that came from a specialist breaker) and had to change a piece I believe between the box and the transfer box to make it work. The breaker did not realise that it was a box from a 2000 model and not a 1995 model.....
The Jeep will now not change gear on it's own. I have to manually change it up and down.
It will not pull away in D, I have to use 2nd to get going. Once rolling, I can change into D. It's the same going down the gears. Reverse however is fine.
My question is: Do these gearboxes use a ECU to govern the gear changes?
Do you think I need to source a 2000 model year ECU to go with the box, or is it possible to remap the 1995 one?
Also the overdrive button on the dash seems to do nothing.
Any advice greatly appreciated; Many thanks, Philippe

It is my opinion you need the TCM (transmission control module) from a 2000 model. The transmission is a 42re. I was wondering if your old one was the AW4, but I checked and that one was only up to 93.
You may need the shift cable as well. I don't understand why it won't engage in drive from a rest, though. Only 3 and O/D are shifted electrically. The 42re also has a lock-up converter that is controlled by the TCM. IDK if your 95 had this or not.
Welcome to CF! Another thing to throw into the mix is this is probably a European model, yes?
