I have a 2006 Grand Cherokee 5.7 litre Limited.

Wife drove it today and said the shifter will only move from Park to Reverse.....will not go in to Neutral or Drive. She said there seems to be resistance when she tries to move past reverse. She also said the shifter cover ( the small rubber or plastic piece surrounding the shifter ) starts to crinkle up when she tries to go to neutral. Sounds like something is binding up underneath the shifter cover. I haven't actually seen it yet. Any ideas from anyone? Thanks

Have you had a look underneath to check if there is something binding?

Hopefully, it's just the slider cover plastic binding up, but you're going to have to lift the shifter plate to check it out. OR you could use both hands and pull real hard!

On my 2000, the cover is several pieces of plastic that slide over each other and when they get dirty they tend to leave open spaces that stuff can drop into. When we took the console out to change my heater core, there was a Chapstick under it.

I actually had a chance to look at this today. It is the sliding rubber belt ( shifter belt/dust cover) located underneath the shifter that is binding up. I can get it to go in to drive, but I don't like how it it is binding up when I do so. Any ideas on a good way to fix this? Any videos? Thanks for your help.
