hey guys i have a 95 zj and i just noticed that there is gear oil on the frame from the rear axle. i followed it back to the axle breather. why would my gear oil be coming out of that?

Has it recently been serviced?? If it was overfilled it will do that. Another possible explanation is that the oil is heating up, expanding and it has to go somewhere.. so its blow out an axle seal, blow out the cover seal, or go out the breather tube. The breather tube being path of least resistance.. it goes that way
If you have rubber plug then you my need to replace. The only way you could over fill is if you had rear rise up. Other explanation would be that your axle seal "beat the dust" but that will show at either wheel. I would look at pinion shaft seal too.
