Default Fuel Pump

Typically how many miles until a fuel pump goes out on the '95 Laredos? Not that I'm having problems at the moment, just considering preventative maintenance. Also, what are symptoms of a fuel pump going out?

Thanks for the learning experience for those who reply.

Acually, I don't believe there is any such thing as preventitive maintenance on a fuel pump other than clean fuel and keeping dirt and water out of the tank. My 97 ZJ had 208K on the original pump when I trashed it because of frame rot. However, my wife's Dodge Caravan's pump went bad because the filler pipe rotted out and rust and road dirt got into the tank. Cost of replacement? $500 (dealer) At these prices, I made my own filler pipe out of exhaust pipe and hose, bought a junkyard pump and did the job myself. 25K later, I sold the van.

Dont run too low on fuel. My wife likes to run around on empty till she fills up. Keep telling her to stop doing it. your bound to suck more dirt up that way. Plus the fuel lubricates and cools the pump.

Actually the pump is out of the fuel after it gets below about 1/4 tank, but the lower it gets, the more the fuel sloshes around, stirring up the sediment in the bottom. Also, if you live in snow country, a full tank may keep you warm and alive long enough for help to arrive. If you can't drive it out of the ditch, that is.

Another thought, The less air there is in the tank, the less moisture the alcohol content can pull out of it. It also helps put more weight on the rear wheels.

IMO, I wouldn't let it get below 1/2 before I filled it.

Going back, I see you DO live in snow country. I live in Upstate New York, land of lake-effect snow!
