Default Front wiper failure

Hi
Recently bought 2003 Grand Cherokee. Great car. yesterday it rained constantly and when driving home from my aunts home (200 mile journey) my front wipers stopped (in the down position) when driving down the motorway. thankfully it had stopped raining and i was only about 100 yards from the slip road that i wanted. The front washer still worked and the rear wiper and washer worked. The front wipers did not work on any setting nor did they work after I turned of the engine and restarted it. However when i started the car this morning the wipers worked as normal.
Is this an intermittent fault caused by overheating etc? is it a known fault? Any ideas what it can be and what I should do to ensure that my wipers continue to work at all times? HELP!!!!

Welcome to CF.
There is a 20 Amp circuit breaker for the wipers in the fuse box/junction box under the drivers side of the dash. >http://www.wjjeeps.com/fuses.htm

There are also two relays for the wipers in the Power Distribution Center (the black box under the hood). >http://www.wjjeeps.com/misc/power_dist_ctr_02.jpg
It could be caused by an overheating breaker or relay, but we bought an '04 Grand new and it now has 110,000 miles on it. It's been driven many times on rainy trips and has never had that happen.
