Default Flashing engine light

My husband and I had my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee loaded down for camping. We were going up a slight grade and then the car started to sputter. The check engine block lite came on and started flashing. We had little power and limped off the highway. After ditching the car for a couple days, I thought I would try to limp it home and it drove perfectly fine. Light not flashing anymore. What happened and do I need to run it in for service?

Yes, a flashing CEL (check engine light) indicates a misfiring cylinder(s). This can cause plenty of damage to the engine as well as cook catalytic converters. You absolutely want to get this fixed.
