Old fart with a wrench
You can look at all the tail light bulb sockets, that is, the holders for the bulbs. They tend to melt because of heat and loose connection on the contacts inside. Once you loose the ground connection, any weird thing can happen. It's a known fault with wedge base bulbs. All of the bulbs in the tail lighting system are 3157 and the various functions are controlled by whatever contacts are used. In other words, each bulb has 2 filaments, high and low wattage. For tail and stop, both filaments are used. For turn and reverse, only the high wattage filament is used BUT all the holders are the same. SO to repair a melted tail light socket, you can steal a reverse socket until you can get a new one. If this is your problem, go get a set from the junk yard.
As far as doing a changeover to 4X4, there's a hell of a lot to change including a transmission, transfer case, entire front axle, driveshafts, shift linkage, and it might even include a Body Control Module. You'd be way ahead buying a 4X4. I'm not aware of what the front suspension looks like on a 4X2 so that might need a total rework as well.
As with anything on wheels, you can build whatever you want if you've got the time, money, and blood to spend on it.
