Finally done!!!
well.. i finally finished
Feels good to get things done. I did it all the work on my 96 Grand Cherokee 5.2 all by myself.
I had a minor slip in first gear under hard acceleration. So I went overboard. I found a transmission off a 97 Grand Cherokee that only had 72k miles on it. It was a package deal (guy wouldn't sell it separate), so for $500 I bought the motor, transmission, front and rear axles, transfer case, complete wire harness with all the computers.
I decided to redo the new motor, install the transmission, and swap the np249 for a nv242 (transfer case was only $150 at the junk yard and luckily it was a direct swap - no transplanting necessary).
This thing started right up without a hickup. Engine sounds awesome, Shifts smooth through the gears, transfer case shift good from 2wd through 4low. I was really suprized. I figured i'd have a lot of bugs to work out.
work done on the eninge: cap and rotor, timing chain and gears, valve cover gasket, new water pump, plenum gasket, new plugs and wires, front and rear seal, timing cover gasket, new oil pump, replaced oil pan gasket and drain plug, cleaned and painted the block and valve covers, of course fresh oil and filter, new belt, new tentioner and idler, and put a new oil pressure sensor on it.
work done to the transmission: new front and rear seals, fresh fluid, filter and gasket.
work done with the nv242 swap: fresh fluid, cleaned and lubed the linkage, put the select a track besel on (changed the shift gate to the 242 one even though it wasn't necessary, put the speedo gear in from the np249, had to put on a short rear drive shaft since the 242 was longer. Also, switch the plugs behind the VIC so it shows the correct position of the tcase.
I also replaced all the rotors, front and rear brakes and the e-brakes.
I feel like i know my jeep inside and out.
