Default Exhaust y pipe help?

So I had to cut off my y pipe because 1. My friend snapped one of the exhaust bolts further down preventing me from unhooking the exhaust. 2. Because one of the pipe to manifold bolts was bent and I couldn't get the bolt out. 3. Because I couldn't get to the starter with it in the way and I also had to take it off to be able to get the engine out.

My question is now that I need to put the exhaust back together is should I try and weld it while the y pipe Is off the car or should I try and weld the pipes with it hooked back on the car? I think It would be easier to do it while it is off the car but I'm worried about getting it all lined up and that if I messed up the y pipe won't bolt on straight to the manifolds. Any advice?

If you want MY opinion, bolt everything back up and tack weld it. Then remove it and finish the welding.

Exactly what I was thinking. I just thought of doing that today so I'm glad you think the same thing.

Mig weld would be best, but you could get by with a stick. Just make sure it's gas tight or it could screw up your 02 sensor readouts.
