It started surging this morning on my way to work almost to as the motor is shutting down then restarting on its own. I have no check engine light or anything and my trans is shift just fine. When it does it I can put it to the floor and it will start to pick up speed but sounds like a backfire or a sparknock but the engine temp is around 180 and its only 45 degrees out.So I am dumb founded on what it could be.
Help!!!!!

 

Check the pick-up (cam sensor) in the distributor and the connector, also the dist. cap contacts and the rotor for carbon build-up.

 

Its feals more like a fuel issue... I changed the fuel filter and check the fuel pressure its all fine.. the only thing left would be the TPS and the cat but I'm not sure

 

Did you ever resolve this issue? I am experiencing something similar in my 98 XJ (148K). Thought it was the Crankshaft sensor but changed that out and the Throttle position sensor and still having this problem.
