Default engine swap 8nfo

I have a 2000 WJ with a 4.0 which blew, I want to take the HO out of my 92 XJ and swap it in. What Problems Will I face? I've heared to swap the heads up, but someone else told me the bell housings might be different. Anyone got some info on this please?

The 92 engine won't swap into the WJ. The 99 and up WJ and TJ have what is called the Clean Slate 4.0, all of the holes and mounting bosses for brackets and accessories are different.

An easy way to identify the engines is the one you're looking for has the oil filter that screws into the side of the block, not on an adapter near the oil pan.

Default ok

I was under the impression that I would have take the head and upper parts of the 2000, and put them on too the 92 to make it work. So this isn't the case? Also do you know if the bell housings are that different?
Thanks for all the info guys.

The bellhousing is the same, but the rest is different.

The whole point here is that in 1999, in order to mount the 4.7 in jeeps, they had to move the motor mount locations, THEREFORE, any engine produced prior to 1999 wouldn't fit. End of story. Sort of.

They also moved the vehicle speed sensor out of the t/cases and put them in the transmission, therefore any t/case made after 1998 won't work properly in an earlier jeep. I think the XJs and TJs were excluded from this change.

Having worked on hotrods and classics, motor mount locations are not the hardest part of an engine swap, but for the average guy like you, you may not want to cobble up your jeep by drilling holes and making something fit. My original reason for saying that was I forgot about the speed sensor change and that not being the end of the story.

Sorry to confuse you.
