My good ol 4.0 blew in my 99 GC.

Its got the distributorless ignition with the coils for each plug.

I am loking at buying a 98 GC motor,
I can just use all my electronics on it, right ?

Well, dont quote me on it... But I am pretty sure the ECUs are different. There is a guy named "seed" that will be on in maybe an hour or so and he will tell you for sure.

btw, how did you blow your engine?

You might have to change the sensors too. I'm not sure.

190,000 miles, thought it was just getting broken in....routine oil change, started clattering on a road trip to Fortwayne In, then let loose from my house to my shop. dropped #1 piston I believe.

Ah... I bet it was that huge hill at Hoffman Lake... My Jeep hates that hill.

But really that is too bad at only 190,000 miles.

You should try and get one of those brand new crate engines that are on Ebay...

I hear ya on thats weird and the hill at the lake !

This motor has always had a little clatter in the coldest of cold weather.

Mostly highyway miles, wife drove it for the last 3 years to work in Bremen and she put 40 miles a day on it so this came as a shock to us. Glad it let go with me driving and not her being stranded. Cool thing, I was able to drive it 4 miles to my shop with it clattering and banging.

Its better if you can find another 99 GC engine as replacement...
By finding one, you never have to worry about electronics...

X2^^^ get a 99+ WJ 4.0, a 98 ZJ 4.0 is way different.

Some of the WJ 4.0's have piston skirt issues so it's not that uncommon what happened to yours but you got some pretty good life outta it.

Thanks Seed ! I have yet to yank my motor and look into it. But I bet your right on the money on the piston skirt.

My question, how much different are the motors if they are bare with no electronics attached? What are the physical differences ?

Oh yeah, before I forget....I found a place in Kokomo that has Jeeps, with lots of newer motors with low mileage!

sensors in different places, motor mounts are different, exhaust manifolds, theres lots of stuff but having said that,i'm not saying it can't be done because i've never tried it but it would just be way less of a headache to stick with a 99+.

Heres a guy that dropped in a newer TJ 4.0,seemed pretty easy. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=785876

Thanks Seed !

Very informative and the motors I am looking at are the TJ's.

I wonder what year of the newer 4.0's had the skirts fixed ?
