Best way is to pull the boot off one end, slide it back, and inspect the wires. Trying to probe the connectors can be futile sometimes. I had a broken wire in my driver's door harness that worked with the door closed, but not with it open. My friendly mechanic's body man had it fixed in 10 minutes.

I did what dave said. Just slid the boot back from the door, towards the frame and wedged it there. I "gently" tugged on each wire until the black one came apart. The wire insulation was probably keeping it together, while the wire itself had creased to the point of not connecting. I added a short length of wire, same gage, and soldered it back together and shrink wrapped it. Some peoples pull the connector and replace the whole wire. I didn't.

That was very smart! If you just soldered it together, it would be flexing at that point and fail again! By adding a section, you restored the section that flexes removing the strain. I've heard of guys who just used a crimp connector, making it solid right where it is supposed to flex!
