Turn your key on until the warning lights come on, then turn it off, on, off, on and wait. The check engine light will start flashing. Count the number of flashes. There is usually a little longer pause between codes, such as a code 23 will be 2 flashes followed by 3 flashes, then a really short pause followed by any other codes. I'm not sure about jeeps, but my Dodge Caravan started with a code 12 and ended with a code 55. The code 12 was "start of test" and the 55 was "end of test". If there aren't any codes set, you may only get the 12 and 55.

Clue; write them down as they happen, then repeat the test to be sure you're right.
