Yeah, if you change real old fluid, you're bound to risk major trouble. I have experienced the exact same thing with a '93 Cherokee and had to pull the tranny and clean / re-assemble the thing. If you have really old fluid, just keep it topped up and cross your fingers. And avoid towing stuff!
