Found this forum while looking for DIY on heater core removal. I am pretty sure that mine is bad. I get an antifreeze smell when turning on my heat, the defrost is very slow and right when I turn the car on, I hear rushing fluid behind my dash on the passenger side. Is it possible that it is something else (AC evap, etc)? Thanks.

Welcome to CF. The anti-freeze smell indicates a leaking heater core, and the sloshing fluid sound behind the dash is from the HVAC box drain being clogged, and this allows the box to fill up with either AC condensation, or in your case anti-freeze. It usually leaks onto the passenger side floor boards at some point.

Evaporator Core Headache
Looks like it's my turn to tackle this task. Are you guys having any success with making this an easy job? Yanking out the dash sound like a huge PITA. I have a '99 Cherokee that I've pretty much ripped the entire a/c system out - next is the core.

Sorry to hear about the water pump failure. A cooling system pressure test will indicate if the heater core is leaking/not holding pressure. Listen at the heater box for pressure/coolant escaping.
