Broken TV Cable Consequences?
So, on a '93 Sport if the TV cable breaks (mine did), will it prevent the transmission from engaging? In other words, no matter where the shifter is placed (D, R, 1-2, or 3) the tranny remains in neutral?
Also, if the TV cable is broken and the TCU is unplugged, should it then shift manually (mine doesn't)?
Lastly, what if the fluid also smells burnt?
Is there any hope?

It should still go into gear without the TV cable, but the transmission will shift at a very high RPM. You do need the cable. If the fluid is burnt it means the transmission has been slipping and the clutches may be shot.

That's simple enough. It'll take me some time before I can get to it.
I'll report my findings then.
Also, if there is no debris should I just go ahead and replace fluid and filter?
And, if there are shavings and such, should I just replace the transmission? I'm fortunate that there are several wrecks available here for little money.

If there is a lot of flakey metal and mud in the pan, plus you say it's not shifting, chances are good that the transmission is due for rebuild or replacement. If the pan is clean inside it could mean that there is an electrical issue, or a sealing issue. The best bet would be to have a transmission shop check it out.
