If you have a Quadri-track, all-wheel drive and an NP249 transfer case, I will bet anyone one this thread a million bucks that it's the Viscous Coupler in the t-case. It's a sealed unit within the case and contains a special type of heat-sensitive silicone and a stack of plates, not unlike a clutch pack. You can change to oil in the transfer case until the cows come home and it won't affect the VC. It can't. An idiot at the local Jeep dealership insisted that I buy a special Chrysler factory lube at $18 a bottle times 2. Didn't do a damn thing. The idiot who listened to him (me!) then had the owner at a trans shop tell him that it was probably the limited-slip differential clutch pak and he had special "friction" oil at $10 a bottle times 2 that stunk like a skunk and I passed on it.
It's the Viscous Coupler and the damn thing can actually be changed out with the t-case in the Jeep! You remove the tailshaft casing, a couple of snap-rings and you're home!
