Oh make sure your key is not in the locked position while you do it. Just keep your jeep off though

 

Iv never done anything like this with a car, but I'm guessing If something is wrong it would stick out pretty badly? What are some areas I should keep an eye out for?

 

Yes it will stand out. You will see a lot of play on a joint between two pieces. You wont miss it. Everything should be tight and move smooth. A auto place such as sears would gladly inspect your steering system for free I think but before you agree on any repairs....ask them to show you what might need repair so you as a auto owner will be more knowledgeable in your vehicle.
