What 4WD system do you have? (i.e. select-trac,quadra-trac,quadra-drive)

What exactly does"popping" mean?

There are differences in the lenghts of the axle shafts depending on the system, maybe you got the wrong style.

Default axle shafts

when I installed an axle shaft on the left front I put the jeep back on the ground and when backing out of the drive I heard a popping noise I have quatradrive all the time all wheel drive this is a 2000 jeep gran cherokee 4x4 limited Iraised the vehicle and with all four wheels off the ground I found the popping noise to be coming from the transfer case it had never popped before removing the front drive shaft has allowed me to operate the jeep without the popping but still I wonder why it started in the first place, matthew

Do you know for sure that the splines on the axle are in the spider gears?

I'm guessing you got the wrong axle shaft, the quadra drive shafts are a different length and you would have to specify when buying that you have quadra drive, even at that they may have given you the wrong one.

I would take it back out and line it up with the old one, hopefully you still have it.

P.S. removing the front driveshaft on the quadra drive system is NOT a good idea for prolonged periods of time.

The axle shaft that italled was the right lenth every thing went together very easy as I took the diff. cover off I am sure it is in the slines of the spider gears and the bearindg fit like it was supposed too. the old shaft was in two pieces when removed but was the same at both ends can the axle and ,diff and transfer case just need a fluid change or be low of fluid would that make it pop?

Well did you put fluid back in the diff after re-installing the cover? Check the t-case fluid? Quadra drive has vari-lock's front and rear (LSD's) so they need friction modifier. If there was no popping before you installed the shaft but was right after,it really seems like something didn't go together the way it should, unless it was the front DS making the noise since you said it's not popping with it removed.

I did put 75-90 gear oil in the front diff but after the axle install I replaced with the 140 synthetic have not checked the fluid in the transfer case the front axle came out in two pieces the end of the axle was not attached to the cv end and I wondered if installing a new axle put the new stress on the transfer case as I saidwas not making noise with the old axle but the cv boot had been torn for some time and was why I was replacing the axle in the first place I perplexed unless the wrong diff fluid did not allow the front axle to slip and was putting stress on the tc was going to look at it again on sunday the front axle takes 1.2 qts so I still need the .2 the tc is next it has what appears to be seepage around the rear driveshaft more happy days ahead love my jeep and want it to be right, matt
