Change your transfer case to the NP242 or the NP231. That's one of the most discussed topics on this site. This may sound crass, but use the search function at the top of the page.

Well, there you go. You learn something every day. I wasn't aware they didn't have the 249. That sounds like he already has the 242 or 231.
You rock, Dukie!

depends entirely on what you plan to do with it. Also i think you mean cold air intake - a snorkel is to prevent water intake in deep water/mud, or heavy dust in the desert

Okay, I know I'm going to be corrected if I'm wrong about the 231, but here goes.
NP/NV 242 gives you 2WD, 4WD partime, 4WD fulltime, N, and 4 low which is partime. Fulltime is like AWD in that it can be used on any surface at any speed. Partime locks the 2 axles together and should only be used on slippery surfaces or loose ground.
Now here's where I may be wrong. The NP/NV 231 gives you 2WD, 4WD partime, N, and 4 low.
I've had 2 jeeps with the 242 and like it very much. The thing that I like so much about it is the "shift on the fly" in that you can shift it at any speed, although I let off on the throttle when doing it. The only time you have to stop or barely roll is going into low range. I've only used that once to walk out of a ditch.
My opinion on the air intake is stick with the stock one. It flows 5 time the air the engine needs and is a cold air system to boot because it gets its air from in front of the radiator and is pressurized by speed. The only reason you'd want a snorkel is if you're going to wade in deep water or want to look cool.

Am I right about the shift options, Dukie? Is the 4WD partime or fulltime on the 231?

yes. 231 is part-time only. The 242 is part time or full time.
