Default awd and 4wheel drive not working

I have a 2000 jeep grand Cherokee limited 4x4 4.7, No power to the front wheels in any mode. When I put it in 4wheel low it feels like its in 4 wheel low but still nothing to the front wheels. Changed the transfer case fluid it was red (looked just like automatic transmission fluid) Drained it out and refilled with nv-247 went out and performed alot of figure 8's still nothing to the front. With the jeep turned off and in park I can turn the front drive shaft (coming out of transfer case) by hand. Should turn freely like that? Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Possibly a broken drive chain in the t/case.

If it's sitting on the ground and he can turn the front shaft by hand doesn't that mean it would have to be on the axle side of the driveshaft not the transfer case side?

This is true, but that would mean both ends wouldn't it?

well if he's in 2wd then the shafts aren't connected in the transfer case if he was in 4 and he could spin the shaft then there would be problems.

Okay, listen. It's a 2000 4.7 Limited so I'm assuming it's a 247 t/case (newer 249). Both front and rear shafts are connected thru the t/case at all times. You can't turn either shaft by hand with the vehicle raised in park unless the t/case is in neutral. With it sitting on the ground, the differential gears won't let them turn at all. I also assume he's talking about turning the front shaft with the front axle raised. THEREFORE, I'm also assuming the drive connection to the front shaft is broken, ie,the chain.

BUT, I could be blowing smoke out my butt.
