Default Audio Questions.

so when/if i get my G2 in august i will be inheriting my brothers 90 xj no big deal but, i would like to put in a decent sub-woofer setup, my brother already has a nice head unit installed. so all i need to put in is new amp and sub, the wiring from his system is already in place and the gauges are acceptable for the system i want.

Here is the sub:
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...-10CVX122.html

and the amp:
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...KAC-9105D.html

I want to know if the existing alternator. and battery will be enough to power the system. with some headroom for the fog-lights(4x110w usually only run 2 at a time)

for the time being i would like to go with a one battery system but in the futre i would love to have a 2 battery setup so i can play tunes at the beach . so i don't want to have to purchase a new alternator when i make the switch to the 2 battery setup.

Thanks and please ask any questions that you need to help me.

According to Kenwood that amp draws 57A @ 13.8VDC.
Your 110watt lights will draw about 8A each or 16A/pair.
I think (but i might be wrong) your stock alternator is about 100Amps.
So if your blastin your stereo with a pair of lights on your load will be about
73A plus what the head unit consumes plus what vehicle requires to operate.

According to the Kenwood specs yes that is correct.
If the amp clips it could peak a little higher I suppose.
I obtained the info from HERE under General Features.

Im not a big believer in line voltage capacitors. In fact i have NEVER used one in the several hundred or so systems I have installed........

If you can stand the volume, you will need a cap. And it will need to be damn close to the amplifiers.

I agree Ron, in this situation where the amp will consume over 50% of the supply on its own a cap could be beneficial.

I've seen caps help and seen them have little effect.
Based on my own experiences I think what really dictates if a line cap will be of any use is the size of the system vs. available power, and the media content.
The media content is what makes a system surge. Some music has a nice relatively steady low mid/bass so your amp is humming along relatively smooth if it has adequate power. If your power source is close to max capacity or weak, something choppy or maybe kick drum heavy with lots of 30hz-60hz will have the low end pulsing and peaking and that's where I think line caps can be helpful. Just my 2¢

So... Should I take a trip to the junk yard for a more powerful alternator?

Not sure what a junk yard would have that would bolt right up and be substantially better. I don't think Jeep offered anything over about 140amps but don't hold me to that. If you really want to build it right I would look for an aftermarket high output alternator in the 200 amp continuous range. That way you have 100 amps available to run the vehicle as intended from jeep and even with 1 pair of lights on and your system thumping the 73amp draw still leaves 27amps of headroom. I would also heavy up the wire from the new H.O. alternator to the battery.
Basically that means with a 200amp alternator if you had all your stock accessories on (headlights, wipers, a/c or heat, etc.) with 1 pair of lights on and your stereo screaming your alternator would be operating at about 86% capacity.
