I have a 97 Laredo as well, and the "universal" one from an earlier year I got from Ebay had a different plug. These are factory ones for 97s, so it should fit, mine did. It was an easy fix, the only difficult part is taking the screws that attach the black bezel to the back of the glove box piece, and then getting the bezel in and out from the clip on its left side. I did not want to break anything. You do not need to take anything off on the drivers side as far as dash trim, just dont forget to take the two screws out behind the ashtray.

The owners manual for my '97 states:
1.Press and hold the SET button while turning the ignition on. The Center will display "Language"-(whatever language was set during the last "Set" cycle).
2.Press the Select button to display the next language selection. You have the choice of English, French, German, Spanish, or Italian. Press the Set button to lock in your choice.
3.After step 2 has been completed the Center will change the screen to a 12 or 24 hour time mode that you can choose between by pressing the select button.
4.Pressing the Set button will lock your choice into the computer.
5.After step 4 has been completed the Center will display the service reminder interval. If you choose to be reminded of service more often than 7,500 miles you can change the mileage interval by pressing the SELECT button.
6.When you have reached the desired number press the SET button to store your choice in the computer and to return the display to normal operation.

In the link it states that it displays fuel mileage etc., but on my '97 ZJ Limited fuel mileage, trip info, and outside temp. are displayed on the overhead info center, not on the lower one.
