ACK!!! Found some broken metal in my transmission pan!
Holy crap....
2002 Grand Cherokee with a transmission that would only shift to second at high RPMs and accelerator released. While in the process of taking the pan down to replace the governor pressure solenoid and sensor, I first notice there's no magnet in the pan. Then I found this...
42RE transmission pieces
So, what am I looking at here and what does it mean?

Yup. There is a 600 lb spring behind that snap ring and it holds the O/D clutch pack together. It's located in the O/D housing on the rear of the transmission and can be repaired as a separate unit without pulling the trans out. You can remove it safely by using pieces of threaded rod and nuts to replace the 4 bolts, then backing them off gradually until the spring pressure is released. The t/case has to be removed first. There are write-ups on this forum and Youtube videos about it.

That's a scary spring!!! I'll see if I can find information on how to do it myself...

Search this forum. I'm sure that's where I saw someone removing a busted one.

For my dodge I was super busy at work so I paid a transmission shop $250 to replace that snap ring and the tail shaft bushing and seal. Not sure what they would charge for a jeep in your area but may be worth a call if you are unsure about the repair.
