Is there a special tool to detach the accumulator from the attachment to the evaporator core at the firewall. I can see a mess of metal at what looks like the connection but want to know for sure before I try and take it out.

Thanks

There is whats called a garder spring, you will need a special tool that moves the up and out of the way. You can find the tool in an assortment at most auto parts stores for dirt cheap. You just push in slightly, slide the proper size tool into the connector and then gently pull the connector apart. Simple. Just be careful not to damage the evaporator when removing or reconnecting the connector.

Okay so I am thinking of going by Kragen and pricing out vac pump rental, , oil, accumulator and the tool needed. I know my system has leaked out but do I need to discharge it anyways? It is not even a hint of cold so I assume all the precious freon is well gone. I just want to do this the right way the first time, I'm tired of ghetto fixes since they just end up costing more and cause more problems.

Blame it on fat fingers and typing in the dark.
