AC Question
If it takes a while for the AC to blow really cold does that mean the system needs a recharge of Freon?
I am also wondering why my ZJ overheats with the AC on while Im sitting in traffic or idling in the driveway. It takes about 5min before the temp gauge starts to move up after I have been sitting.
Is this a radiator problem? maybe I need a new fan?
Im driving a 97 grand cherokee laredo 4x4 4L

Old fart with a wrench
Okay, here we go with what I know or have to suggest. I owned a 97 ZJ 4.0 so I know it only has a clutch fan. The A/C in mine never worked when I had it, but it used to get hot sitting in traffic as well. I used to have to slip it into neutral and rev it up a little to keep it cool. Turning on the heater and roasting your gonads helps also.
My suggestion is to flush the system, then install an electric booster fan with a simple switch, OR add an automatic controller. There are several excellent posts on the site from people who have done this. I know that Bustedback has installed an aftermarket controller and has had good luck with it.
My 2000 WJ only has an electric fan and it is switched to run on high when the A/C is on.
BTW, R134a doesn't cool as well as the old R12 did.

My fan swap works awesome. A junkyard 94 Ford Taurus fan that trimmed until it fit the radiator perfectly and a Flex A Lite fan controller that is adjustable is all it took. I recommend using a circuit breaker instead of a fuse to power the fan, it pulls a lot of amps when it first kicks on and will melt the fuse and cause a failure after a while. My engine temperature actually goes down when sitting start light. I have made a few changes since I first did the swap. An all aluminum two row radiator and a XJ water pump are new.
