Default AC just died!

Of course it would die on the hottest week of the freaking year.

I am assuming it is the compressor, it was blowing cold then I got this funky smell checked under the hood and some kind of fluid has leaked out of the compressor and blew black crap around the serpentine belt with a funky smell almost smells like burned plastic.

Is there any FYI's out there for replacing the compressor? I would appreciate any advice it doesn't look terribly difficult.

Bump...Anyone? Could it just be the clutch? What is the black oil stuff that's all over the inside of my hood and stuck to the compressor clutch?

That, I can tell you is most certainly a clutch assembly failure. It's more likely the bearing on the pulley. Had the exact same thing happen to me on my SHO about 6 years back...it was made more miserable from the heat, and smoke from local wildfires was very thick, like 100ft visibility bad. I did the compressor, because after I pulled the hub off the shaft to inspect it, I noticed the shaft seal leaking.

Just passing on an experience. My wife's Dodge Caravan went through 2 compressors before we caught this. The expansion orifice was icing up and backpressuring the compressor with liquid gas and causing the compressor to seize. We fixed it by replacing the orifice and dryer, the orifice being in the hose assembly. I replaced the first compressor myself, the second one was done by a technicion.

$125 for the first compressor, $250 for the second with repair and recharge.
