I'm new to ABS systems, my 98 ZJ has the light on the dash.
Whats the common causes for this?
Also, for future reference can an OBDII system be deactivated or removed all together without problems with yearly inspections?

A bad sensor, low brake fluid, or a blown fuse can cause the ABS light to come on. And no, you can not remove the OBDII system in order to skirt around the inspection. The engine will not run without the OBDII system, and the light has to come on during the bulb check in order to pass inspection.

The pump controller sometimes gets corroded and needs to be removed and cleaned. It's the box under the pump on the drivers inner fender near the master cylinder.
Also there's a diode in the wiring harness in the dash, and when it goes bad it triggers the ABS light. Supposedly a common problem that mechanics fix and charge more expensive repairs for. It shows this diode in the ABS wiring diagram, but my scanner is down. I have a few scans saved onto Photobucket but unfortunately that's not one of them.
One of the ABS fuses also covers the vehicle info center near the console on my '97, so removing the ABS entirely will affect other things.
Hope this is helpful John.

My ABS light was on for about two weeks when I needed to do my front brakes. Changed them the other day (pads and rotors) and haven't seen it since.
